Is er een leven na HP7?

JK Rowling zal het volmondig bevestigen: voor haar begint het leven nu pas. Af en toe nog een filmscriptje redigeren (HP6 en HP7 moeten nog verfilmd worden), nog een boek schrijven voor een volwassen publiek, maar verder vooral veel ontPotteren, denk ik.

Een arm lezertje als ik mag op zoek naar andere bezigheden. Want ja, je valt toch in een gat, niet?         Ik weet nu hoe het afloopt, een HP8 lijkt me erg onwaarschijnlijk (maar niet onmogelijk!).

Ik vind het trouwens opvallend, dat ik in Nederland in 'dé Media' nog helemaal geen spoilers ben tegengekomen. Nou kijk/luister/lees ik vrij selectief, maar toch. Meer dan dat er "iemand" doodgaat, ben ik eigenlijk nog niet tegengekomen. Kennelijk houdt iedereen zich prima aan de erecode om niets te verklappen.

Voor mezelf heb ik trouwens nog niet uitgemaakt welke van de zeven ik nou het beste vind. Deel 5, 6 en 7 maken de meeste kans. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is vooral zo knap, omdat het kostschoolsfeertje uit de eerste boeken totaal verdwenen is, en dat er een spannende, noem het volwassen, avonturenroman voor in de plaats is gekomen. Wat ook bijna verdwenen is, is dat zeikerige huiltoontje van Potter, als ie alles weer eens alleen wil doen, zijn vrienden niet in die poel van ellende wil trekken, of als hij zich weer eens bedrogen voelt door Dumbledore/Perkamentus. En dat gejank om zijn vermoorde ouders, ja, dat weten we nou wel en het ligt er gelukkig niet meer zo dik bovenop.

Het is ook geen vrolijk boek. Er vallen nogal wat doden, powergirl Hermelien wordt gemarteld, voortdurend hangt de dreiging van ontdekking van hun verblijfplaats boven het hoofd. Potter, Ron en Hermelien zijn 80% van de tijd op de vlucht voor überkiller Voldemort. Ze verplaatsen zich om de paar dagen naar een andere plek. Bossen, heuvels, water, het maakt niet uit, als ze maar hun tentje, omgeven door tientallen beschermingsspreuken, kunnen opzetten. Voortbewegen doen ze vrijwel altijd onder de Onzichtbaarheidsmantel (een van de Deathly Hallows) en met Verdwijnselen, in hun jacht op de Horcruxes, die stuk voor stuk vernietigd moeten worden.

Leuk dat in deel 7 talloze kleine en grote zaken en zaakjes uit alle voorgaande delen nog eens opgerakeld en verklaard worden. Olivander de toverstokkenverkoper, Dobby de huiself, Goudgrijp, Bellatrix Lestrange (naar mijn stellige overtuiging dé ideale partner voor een lange nacht met hete, dampende sex, maar ja, het blijft een boek voor alle leeftijden natuurlijk), de sorteerhoed, het Dagboek van Tom Riddle, de trein, zelfs de chocoladekikker komt voorbij, geloof ik.

De toverschool Hogwarth's komt in het hele stuk nauwelijks voor eigenlijk. Behalve in de onvermijdelijke eind-'battle' tussen HP en Voldemort, die natuurlijk op Zweinstein plaatsheeft.

Apetrots ben ik ook op mezelf: ik heb al jaren een beeld van welke rol Severus Sneep/Snape speelt in dit laatste boek, en verdomd zeg, helemaal goed geraden. (Bravo, CoM!) Maar soms zit ik er ook flink naast, hoor. Zo wist ik zeker dat puntjepuntje het niet zou overleven, maar op de laatste pagina is hij alive 'n kicking!

Waarom al die heisa over dat laatste hoofdstuk, by the way? Waarom heeft dat ding jaren in de kluis gelegen? Een beetje flauw: met oude bekenden die nu ineens vader en moeder zijn en hun kinderen, vernoemd naar andere oude, vooral dode, bekenden, naar de trein brengen...., een ontzettende afknapper. Afgezien daarvan, hulde, maar ik ben blij dat het voorbij is. Geen zwart gat voor mij dus, maar eindelijk tijd voor nog vele andere boeken.

Whaha wat een geestige recensie. Ik moet bekennen dat ik na deel drie ben afgehaakt. Misschien pak ik het over een paar jaar, als HP in de vergetelheid is geraakt, nog eens op.

Jongste dochter moest en zou HP7 hebben op 21 juli, dus werd het boek die dag om 9 's ochtends gekocht in Perugia, halfweg onze Italiaanse vakantie. Ter voorbereiding had ze de eerste week deel 6 effe herlezen, en terwijl ze aan nummer 7 begon, kon ik alvast deel 6 lezen. Voor mij het eerste uit de reeks overigens, want ik had enkel de films 1 t/m 5 gezien, maar geen letter gelezen.
Luttele dagen later was het leeswerk klaar. Deel 6, waarvan ik vooraf al wel wat wist (ook o.m. via de recensie hier in de leesclub) viel mij wel mee, al was het einde, met moord en verraad, niet bepaald prettig. Zoals je hierboven zegt, over de rol van Sneep viel te speculeren. Wat zat er (dat moest toch?) achter dit vreemde en wrede einde?
Films en boeken vergelijken is wat moeilijk, maar ik heb deel 7 toch ongeveer het best kunnen smaken (van vijf films en twee boeken). Het is een overtuigend slot geworden, waarin allerlei lijnen netjes bij elkaar komen. Het spectaculaire einde zit nog vol kleine en grote verrassende wendingen. Je wordt er ook bijna pardoes ingegooid: bladzijdenlang word je aan het weliswaar spannende lijntje gehouden, terwijl de hoofdfiguren nauwelijks vooruitgang boeken, en dan plots, lang voor ze ook maar enigszins klaar lijken te zijn (integendeel) voor de grote confrontatie, worden de hoofdfiguren (én de lezer) in de finale maalstroom van gebeurtenissen meegezogen naar de onafwendbare krachtmeting toe. Ook die loopt niet helemaal ('helemaal niet' is dan weer te sterk) zoals verwacht, en zo hoort het natuurlijk ook, maar het zal niet de bedoeling zijn om dat hier te vertellen. Wie de avonturen van Harry tot nu zo'n beetje heeft gevolgd, zal zich met deel 7 niet vervelen.
